Historical notes

November 22, 1921 was the official date of the founding of the Circolo Mandolinistico  Senese (Sienese Mandolin Club).

The mandolinist, Alberto Bocci, and the virtuoso guitarist, Giovanni Murtula, were among the founding members, a group of enthusiastic players of instruments  plucked with the fingers or a plectrum.

Between 1937 and 1943 the orchestra, under the patronage of the national broadcasting company, gave over 80 concerts and was recorded by Victor (his master’s voice).

In 1969, the orchestra performed in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet with the Israel Symphony Orchestra  conducted by Claudio Abbado at the La Scala  theatre of Milan and with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale in Florence.

In the 1980s, members of the orchestra performed in Verdi’s Othello in Cagliari  (conductor  Francesco Molinari-Pradelli) and in Florence (conductor Riccardo Muti).

In the 1990s, the orchestra accepted invitations to play with various plectrum orchestras abroad:  Germany (Karlsruhe 1991 and Wiesbaden 2002), Spain (Villa Real 1992 and Logroño 1995), France (Chalon sur Saône, 1997).

Since 2000 the orchestra has expanded its concert repertory to include new types of music, participating in the Winter 2000 Umbria Jazz  Festival and Jazz and Image in Rome. That same year, the orchestra took part in the fourth  Festival Internazionale di Mandolino Città di Varazze, and in 2003, the fourth Concorso Internazionale per gruppi strumentali a plettro Giacomo Sartori (Ala)

With the recording of picies from then Barocco production, The Orchestra is present into the CD attached at the pubblication of " Lo stile della trasgressione" - il Barocco nella Val d'Elsa (2008).

The Orchestra a Plettro Senese attended in July 2009 to the 7th International Festival of Mandolin and Guitar Orchestras in Rémiremont (France), invited as the only orchestra from Italy.

Conducted for almost 60 years by the Maestro Alberto Bocci. and for about 30 years by the Maestro Giuseppe Baldesi, the orchestra is currently directed by Maestro Gabriele Centorbi

The Festival, patronized by Monte dei Paschi di Siena with the support of Comune di Siena, Comune di Colle di Val d'Elsa, Complesso museale del Santa Maria della Scala and the Soprintendenza, is the first international event of the Orchestra a Plettro Senese "Alberto Bocci" and the first competition trepick notes dedicated to young talent.
